6 Mistakes to Avoid When Creating a Mobile App UI

User interface design is one of the most important ways to increase your website’s traffic and conversion rates.

UI design can make the difference between a successful application and an application that does not make an impact on the user. It manipulates both the outer layers of the design as well the placement of an element on the design. User interface is the overall feel of your mobile app and website- how it’s presented, what it looks like, and how people can interact with it.

Before you start designing your user interface, you need to understand the common mistakes that can adversely impact users.

  1. Poor Spacing

A good user interface should be clear and concise so that users can understand it at a glance. For this, employing padding and spacing effectively is important. Although, in an over enthused effort on designer’s part to add more information, an unevenness can creep in. This unevenness makes the page look cluttered and often confuses users.

However, you can avoid this situation by following simple design rules for padding and spacing and by understanding the significance of white spacing in increasing the readability of content.

  1. Unorganized Text

Do not overwhelm your users with an unorganized text. It is the main unit of information content and should always be easy to read and well organized.

Here are a few things to keep in mind to organize text in the most complete and understandable way:

  • Plenty of contrast between each style title

  • Separate each style using size, weight, and color

  • Always start with a big title to clearly display the information hierarchy

  • Keep sub-headers and other text smaller

  • Adequate spacing

  1. Inconsistent Fonts

Most designers try to use different fonts and colour schemes to create eye-catching content.  However, using different fonts only distracts and annoys the user. Instead, you should keep the fonts simple and coherent. With organized and easily recognizable fonts, you provide great navigation, better user readability, and ease of use for users.

  1. Cluttering

Visual clutter is a common cause of inefficient user interfaces. Over-inserting your app’s interface design with certain features and not giving proper thought as to what constitutes the right amount of information on screen, only adds to the cognitive load of users. It slows them down and makes them feel dissatisfied with the experience.

Thus, it is important to keep the content and interface components to the minimum and present the users with what they need to know and no additional information.

Additionally, you can employ a progressive disclosure technique to provide your app’s content and features to users in a progressive or step-by-step way.

  1. Using the Wrong Colour Palette

Choosing a suitable colour palette is extremely important while designing the UI. It adds to the visual experience and leaves an excellent first impression. Striking a balance between colour compositions requires the selected palette to be in accordance with basic rules of graphic design and colour theory.

Also, you need to pay attention to contrast as well. A low contrast between your interface elements merges all of them together and leaves you with a dull and hard-to-read interface. So, use the contrast in a way that distinguish content from the background colour.

  1. Not Adhering to Native OS Design Guidelines

Every mobile OS has its own set of guidelines for interface design. So, it's important to adhere to these guidelines when building an app for a native platform to bring more quality to the interface design. Neglecting them only creates friction and results in a poor user experience.

The final goal for UI designers is to produce intuitive and aesthetic interfaces. It must add to the overall user experience, which leads to more conversations. And if you need some help to make the process a little easier, contact us.
